Who are we?
The Circuito Cultural Barracas is an artistic – communitary project that,by means of art , promotes actions of social trasformation helping to build citizenship as well as equity and social inclusion among its members.
It is a place where collective and group work find the ground to imagine, embody and produce ideas, foster values and carry out actions that help changing exclusion situations , and at the same time letting the social capacity of our community grow and find new ways of expression.
The name Circuito, expresses the way in which we work. ; we try to generate synergy among the different actors engaged in the communitary development , promoting the project, letting it stir, move and “circulate”and “go across” the diverse socio-economical and cultural realities found in the neighbourhood, with people belonging mostly to middle, low and poor social classes.
We are working in the Barracas neighbourhood since 1996 and we became a non-proffit Civil Association in the year 2001.
Which is our aim?
The cultural and artistic production means “engaging with” neighbours of all ages allowing the growth of creative capacities of those involved in the group actions.
The social inclusion of the young people in a vulnerable situation by means of integrating them to our artistic comunitary project.
Alternative ways of communication : finding our roots, knowing our history, and neighbourhood identity. Tackling specific problems in our community promoting links between neighbours and local organizations.
Actions of impact both at public and local level trying and solve community problems and pronmoting cultural devepolment by means of colective artistic procedures.
Working in a web style together with other communitary theatre groups, tranfering our experience and multiplying the artistic communitary proposal to other neighbourhoods ,towns and cities in our country.
What do we do?
As a group we create and produce our own shows and actings. Presentations and theatrical performances take place at our own premises or in public places.
We develop the artistic creations together with the group of neighbours bearing in mind and following the line of art as way of social transformation.
As members of the National Web of Communitary Theatre Groups we provide advice and training to other groups in the site.
We transfer tools used in the Communitary theatre to other social organizations – either civil or public – that work in different fields ( health, education, work, youth,etc.)
We are members of the Red Metropolitana de arte y Transformación Social together with the el Grupo de Teatro Catalinas Sur, Crear Vale la Pena y Culebrón Timbal, y and the Red Latinoamericana de Arte y Transformación Social (24 organizations from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia are part of it. They work trying to generate and help social bettering towards equity, real citizenship, social integration, promoting human rights and cultural diversity)
Who profit from our Project?
250 active members of different ages are part of the CCB together with their families. (a bout 1000 people in all)
The shops and businesses around our premises, because there has started an intersting economical exchange as our presentations bring people to the area..
The Circuito has turned into the only place in the neighbourhood where all neighours can be in contact with artistic presentations and enjoy them,.
An annual average of 15.000 spectators attend our presentations.
Members of the other 25 Communitary theatres in different neighbourhoods, towns and cities, we help through technical advice and training (1500 people average)
With what resources do we count on?
As a group based on a self-management approach we cover about 60% of our total budget. This we carry out by selling tickets, donations, membership fees, publicity and merchandising.
Public and private organizations support us too such as : Ministerio de Cultural del Gobierno de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, El Instituto Nacional del Teatro; Proteatro, El Ministerio de Cultura de la Nación, para el proyecto Cartilla de Retransmisión de Teatro comunitario La Fundación Avina for the formation and strenghthening of Communitary Theatre groups, for our own internal strenghthening and for a proyect on environmental care in our neighbourhood and other public places.
“Friendsor Supporters of the Circuito”
Our proyect needs the whole commmunity’s help. That’s why we have worked out in our fundraising system. “ Supporters” that by means of a monthly fee help as silent members. Their contribution –starting from $10 -is charged in a credit card or by volunteers that go and collect it . This allows us to keep on improving in our project of art and social transformation where 300 neighbours in Barracas are involved , working out a collective strategy for the improvement of the quality of life for us and the people around us.
